The Early Years and Formative Paths
Born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1937, Walter Stöhrer spent his childhood moving through various locations in the Black Forest as the effects of World War II reshaped his surroundings. His family eventually settled in Karlsruhe, a place that would become central to his artistic training. Before he could pursue formal academic studies, he spent his early years as an apprentice in commercial graphical art between 1952 and 1954. This period of practical training provided him with a foundational understanding of line and structure.
In 1956, he began his official studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. He first focused on graphic art under Hans Gaenssken and later moved into painting within the class of HAP Grieshaber. During these years, he studied alongside other notable figures such as Horst Antes and Dieter Krieg. By 1959, Stöhrer moved to Berlin, a city that would host his work for much of his professional life.
A Language of Gesture and Spirit
Stöhrer developed a style that many identified with the movement of Tachismus and abstract expressionism, yet he carved out a space for himself through what he called intrapsychic realism. His method often drew from ecriture automatique, or automatic writing, a technique where the hand moves without conscious control to reveal deeper truths. This approach allowed him to blend the spontaneous energy of abstract marks with figurative elements that felt deeply personal.
His work was frequently shaped by external intellectual influences. He found inspiration in the written word, particularly the works of André Breton and Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, as well as in the ideas of ancient philosophers and musical concepts. Through his use of intense colors and heavy, gestural movements, he sought to translate inner experiences onto the canvas. His technical repertoire was broad, spanning:
- Painting and overpaintings on paper
- Graphic art and etching
- Drawing and ink work
- A unique combination of writing and drawing
Recognition and Academic Legacy
The early 1960s brought significant attention to his practice. His first individual exhibition took place in 1961 in the basement gallery of Darmstadt castle, and by 1964, he was receiving honors such as the Art Prize of the City of Berlin. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the Villa Romana Prize in Florence and the Will-Grohmann-Preis in Berlin.
Beyond his personal studio practice, Stöhrer was a dedicated teacher. He served as a visiting professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin from 1981 to 1982, eventually becoming a professor there in 1986. His influence extended to the next generation of artists through his position at the Universität der Künste. Even after his death in Scholderup in 2000, his presence remains felt through the Walter Stöhrer-Stiftung, a foundation that supports graphic art students in both Berlin and Stuttgart.
