A Life Painted in Landscapes
Born into a family where melody and color intertwined, Paul Léon Félix Schmitt entered the world in Paris. His lineage was one of creative discipline; his father, Georges Schmitt, was a composer, while his mother, Léontine Aline Pau de Saint-Martin, practiced both piano and painting. This early immersion in the arts shaped a man who would eventually dedicate himself to capturing the quietude of the French countryside. He studied under Antoine Guillemet, a mentorship that grounded his technical approach in the traditions of landscape painting.
Schmitt’s career was defined by an observant eye for the changing light of the Parisian outskirts and beyond. His canvases often focused on the environs of Paris, including the Essonne, Normandy, and Picardie, as well as the rugged textures of Auvergne and Bretagne. He possessed a particular talent for documenting the suburban landscapes of France before they were transformed by rapid urbanization. Through his frescoes and sketches, he preserved the character of places like Montrouge, Asnières, and Vanves, capturing churches and riverbanks that have since been altered by time.
Recognition and Artistry
The trajectory of his professional life was marked by steady participation in the established art circles of his era. From 1879 until his death, he exhibited at the Salon de Paris, a presence that signaled his integration into the French artistic community. In 1888, he achieved membership in the Société du Salon des artistes français. His technical skill earned him formal accolades, most notably a bronze medal at the 1889 Exposition universelle de Paris.
His repertoire was as varied as the terrains he chose to depict. While oil on canvas remained his primary medium for larger works, he frequently worked with other materials to capture different moods and scales:
- Oil and black ink on canvas
- Gouache on cardboard
- Watercolor and aquarelle
- Pierre noire on paper
- Frescoes for municipal buildings
Beyond his own easel, Schmitt contributed to the education of others. He taught drawing in Paris schools around 1882 and played a role in the development of his sister, Noémie Schmitt, who also became a painter. His work remains held in several significant collections, including the Musée de Picardie and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la ville de Paris.
The Final Years
Schmitt’s life ended in Paris in 1902. He left behind a body of work that functions as a visual record of a specific French geography. His later years were spent producing sketches and compositions for various town halls, including works for Vincennes, Thiais, and Vanves. These pieces, often executed in gouache, provided a glimpse into the architectural and natural landscape of the period. He was survived by his widow, Louise Alice Lucie née Tardy, who ensured that several of his contributions were donated to the city of Paris in 1907.
