As her career progressed, she joined the Berlin Secession Movement and began formal studies at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Hertzer’s body of work is noted for its versatility in thematic and stylistic aspects. Art historians have highlighted her early creative phase, specifically pointing to her powerfully expressionist watercolors from the 1920s. During the Second World War, she received a commission from her hometown to create a series of wall murals depicting the history of Wittenberg for a communal bunker. While her work initially fell into oblivion after her death, a subsequent rediscovery led to a new art-historical reassessment and various exhibitions in locations such as Berlin, Wittenberg, and Füssen.
