The Architect of Abstraction

Born in Sydney in 1953 and raised amidst the quiet, storied landscapes of Beecroft, Richard Goodwin’s early life was a rich tapestry of discovery. The echoes of his grandfather’s explorations—the remnants of Aboriginal culture and cinematic fragments found within a dusty shed—planted the seeds of a lifelong fascination with the layers of history and identity. A pivotal encounter with the renowned architect Harry Seidler during his formative years ignited a profound passion for structural design, eventually leading him to the University of New South Wales. It was here that the boundaries between the built environment and fine art began to blur, as he pursued architecture while simultaneously immersing himself in the expressive, unbridled possibilities of the canvas.

Porosity and the Urban Pulse

Goodwin’s practice is defined by a profound investigation into the concept of porosity, exploring the delicate, often invisible membranes where architecture meets the atmosphere. His work transcends the static nature of buildings, instead capturing the dynamic interaction between urban structures and their surrounding environments. Drawing deep inspiration from the raw energy of Abstract Expressionism—specifically the gestural power of artists like Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning—Goodwin translates architectural tension into visual rhythm. His paintings do not merely depict space; they inhabit it, inviting a contemplation of how human presence is shaped by the very walls and textures that surround us.

Materiality and the Gestural Mark

The visceral impact of Goodwin’s work lies in his masterful manipulation of materiality and surface. His canvases are often characterized by a striking duality, utilizing bold black pigments against stark white or muted, pale backgrounds to create a sense of immediate, rhythmic movement. Through the deliberate layering of paint and the incorporation of sculptural elements, he disrupts conventional perspectives, creating surfaces that possess a palpable, tactile energy. In works such as Farewell Franz (Kline) and his various Abstract series, the viewer encounters a landscape of shadow and light, where texture serves as a medium for emotional resonance, evoking themes of solitude and the complex relationship between human presence and architectural space.

A Legacy of Interdisciplinary Vision

Beyond the studio, Goodwin has significantly shaped the next generation of creators through his distinguished role as an academic and professor at UNSW Art & Design. His dual identity as an architect and a painter allows him to bridge the gap between structural logic and artistic intuition, a perspective that has earned his work prominent positions within major collections, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales. His contribution to contemporary art remains a testament to the power of interdisciplinary thought, proving that the study of space can lead to a profound exploration of the human soul.
