The Pieta 1 was commissioned by French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères, who served as the representative of King Charles VIII in Rome at that time. The sculpture was intended for his funeral monument within the Old St. Peter's Basilica. However, when Old St. Peter's was demolished during the construction of the new basilica, the Pieta 1 was preserved and moved to its current location.Artistic Significance
