A Visionary of the Caribbean Soul

Born in the vibrant heart of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1965, Mariojosé Ángeles carries within his creative essence the rhythmic pulse and spiritual depth of the Caribbean. His artistic odyssey began not with a brush, but with the structured lines of architecture. Enrolled at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo in 1982, he initially sought to shape the physical world through design; however, the call of the visual arts proved irresistible. Within three years, he abandoned the drafting table for the canvas, embarking on a transformative journey that would eventually lead him from the tropical landscapes of his homeland to the prestigious art circles of Europe.

The evolution of Ángeles’ style is a testament to a lifelong pursuit of the self. His early training under the renowned Dominican master Guillo Perez provided a foundational strength, yet it was his period of international residence in Brussels, Belgium, between 1998 and 2007, that expanded his horizons into the realms of sculpture and installation. This era of exploration allowed him to integrate diverse disciplines, moving seamlessly between the tactile nature of sculpture and the ethereal possibilities of digital photography. His work serves as a profound meeting point where the soul encounters the "superior I," translating the whispers of the subconscious into icons of light and color.

Symbolism and the Language of Dreams

To encounter a work by Mariojosé Ángeles is to enter a dreamscape where surrealism and abstraction dance in a delicate balance. His imagery is rarely mere representation; instead, it is a sophisticated language of symbols designed to evoke emotional truths. One of his most poignant recurring motifs is the umbrella—a symbol that, as noted by critics, transcends its physical form to become a metaphor for protection, geometry, and the intersection of time and space. Through this and other enigmatic figures, he explores the tension between our external reality and our internal, spiritual landscapes.

His technical mastery is most evident in his use of acrylics, a medium he employs to achieve a remarkable sense of luminosity and textural depth. By meticulously layering pigments, Ángeles creates surfaces that seem to glow from within, capturing the sun-drenched intensity of Caribbean light. This technique allows him to bridge the gap between the tangible and the transcendent, making his dreamlike landscapes feel both physically present and hauntingly distant. Whether through a sprawling mural or an intimate painting, his work remains anchored in a deep respect for human values and the preservation of the spirit in an ever-changing world.

A Legacy of International Resonance

The trajectory of Ángeles’ career is marked by significant milestones that have solidified his reputation as a global contemporary artist. From his early exhibitions in the Dominican Republic starting in 1988 to his selection for the prestigious Salon Grands et Jeunes d'Aujourd'hui in Paris, his reach has been truly international. His contributions to public art, such as the mural Homosapiens-Caribeen in the permanent collection of the University of Namur, Belgium, demonstrate his ability to engage with large-scale architectural spaces and communal narratives.

Beyond the canvas, his versatility shines through various artistic manifestations:

• Installation Art: Projects like Santa Cucaracha, which explored social themes such as the AIDS vaccine, showcase his commitment to using art as a vehicle for social inquiry.
• Digital Photography: Exhibitions such as Blue Dreams highlight his ability to manipulate light and digital space to create fantasy-driven, atmospheric landscapes.
• Sculpture: His studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Jean Jacques Belliard in Brussels infused his work with a three-dimensional sensibility that informs the weight and presence of his paintings.

Today, Mariojosé Ángeles stands as a bridge between cultures. He remains a vital voice in contemporary art, weaving together the folklore of the Dominican Republic with the sophisticated abstraction of the European avant-garde. His oeuvre continues to be a profound exploration of what it means to be human, inviting every viewer to look through the lens of his vibrant, symbolic, and deeply spiritual vision.
