Born in London to John Hodgson, a Russia merchant with considerable influence within Newcastle upon Tyne’s elite circles, Hodgson's upbringing instilled in him an appreciation for intellectual pursuits and artistic tradition. His formative years were spent in St Petersburg before returning to England for his education, where he honed his skills at Rugby School and subsequently pursued a career in commerce alongside his burgeoning artistic ambitions.
