Leon Kaufmann was born in June 1872 in Pawłowo, Poland. His technical foundation began in 1888 at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw. This space functioned as a gathering point for various figures, including actors and authors, cementing his position within the city's social fabric. His personal life became intertwined with French high society in 1914 when he married Odette Dessauces, a woman from a wealthy French family. This connection coincided with a period of increasing stability. By 1922, Kaufmann had moved to an estate in Louveciennes, though he maintained his professional studio in Paris to continue his work. He remained active in the Parisian exhibition circuit, frequently showing his work at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuilerres.

Kaufmann’s output was defined by a refusal to adhere to the rigid artistic schools emerging in France during his tenure in Paris. He moved through a variety of genres, focusing his technical attention on portraits, landscapes, and interior scenes. His presence in the Parisian art scene was solidified through regular exhibitions at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Tuilerres, and the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he became a member in 1911. He utilized Luminist techniques to intentionally create an impression of vagueness, prioritizing light and atmosphere over sharp, clinical precision.
