Wilhelm Melchior was born into a family where the brush was a common tool. His father, Georg Wilhelm, and his brother, Joseph Wilhelm, both worked as painters, creating an environment where the observation of the physical world was a shared language. He began his formal training at the Königliche Akademie der Künste in München, starting his studies in 1832. His path eventually led him away from Germany to London, where he continued his studies between 1850 and 1851. By 1860, his focus remained steady, capturing scenes such as Sheep, Ram and Goat at the Gate and Pasture Cattle on the Alp. These were not mere studies but observations of a way of life. His technical skill was recognized in Munich, where two of his hunting scenes found their way into the collections of the Neue Pinakothek.
