The Life and Art of Raffaellino da Reggio
Born in 1550 in Codemondo, Italy, Raffaellino da Reggio was a painter of the Mannerist style. The son of a builder, he began his artistic journey by training under Lelio Orsi in the studio of Novellara, as well as with the medallist Alfonso Ruspagiari. His early career saw him painting facades in Reggio Emilia and in Guastalla, where he worked for Cesare Gonzaga. By December 1570, he had moved to Rome, where he performed a commission for the cardinal Ippolito d’Este.
His body of work in Rome displays an eclectic approach. He worked alongside Lorenzo Sabbatini on commissions for the Vatican under Gregory XIII, and he also collaborated with Giovanni de' Vecchi at the Villa Farnese in Caprarola, specifically in the Sala del Mappamondo and the Camera degli Angeli. Other notable works include frescos for the Oratory of Gonfalone in Rome and a depiction of the Martyrdom of the four crowned saints for the Capella di San Silvestro in the church of Santi Quattro Coronati. He also appears to have worked at the Palazzino Gambara in Villa Lante in Bagnaia.
A Brief and Talented Career
Raffaellino's artistic output was cut short by his premature death in Rome in 1578. He was approximately 28 years of age when he was overcome by what Giovanni Baglione described as a "malignant fever." Baglione, a historian of the period, considered his early death a significant loss to the art world, suggesting that had the painter lived longer, he would have achieved even more amazing things. His surviving oil paintings, such as his depictions of Tobias and the Angel and Diana and Acteon, demonstrate a certain compositional felicity.
