The Artistic Evolution of Marcel Barbeau
Born in Montreal, Canada, Marcel Barbeau was a multidisciplinary artist who engaged with various forms of abstraction and art techniques to express himself. He studied under Paul-Émile Borduas at l'École du Meuble in Montreal, where he shared a studio with Jean-Paul Riopelle. Alongside other students of Borduas, he was part of a group known as the Automatistes. During the period from 1946 to 1957, his work was influenced by an interest in psychoanalysis and the use of the unconscious. In 1948, he was a signatory of the Refus Global, a movement seeking freedom from formal structures.

Following the departure of his contemporaries to Paris and New York, Barbeau explored several paths, including small ink non-objective paintings, calligraphy, drawing, and collage. His practice eventually expanded to include Op Art and film techniques, as well as performance art that materialized through various media.
