A Life of Artistic Resilience
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Léo Maillet, also known as Leopold Mayer or Théophile Maillet, was a painter, photographer, and draftsperson. His early training began with the watercolorist Fay in Vienna, followed by studies at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in the graphics class of Professor Franz Karl Delavilla. A significant turning point in his career occurred in 1930 when Max Beckmann accepted him into his masterclass. His artistic output was profoundly impacted by the political upheavals of the era; his studio in Paris was raided by the Gestapo in 1943, resulting in the destruction of much of his work created since 1926. Despite these losses, he continued to work in various locations, including Luxembourg, Paris, and Switzerland, eventually becoming a Swiss citizen in 1968.
