Early Life and Artistic Beginnings
Born in Madrid, Spain, José San Bartolomé Llaneces emerged from a humble background. After receiving only a primary education, his talent for drawing led him to enroll in night classes at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios in Madrid. At the age of eleven, he began working as an apprentice in the studio of the photographer and portraitist Pedro Martínez de Hebert. His technical skill was recognized early when he received an award in artistic drawing during the 1880-1881 course.
Llaneces furthered his training at the Escuela de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando for three years. During this period, he frequently visited the Museo del Prado to study the great masters, particularly Velázquez. His early success was marked by the sale of his painting Una nereida, which allowed him to forgo a scholarship to Rome. By 1884, he was participating in the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes with his work Gladiadores antes del combate.
Parisian Success and Later Years
In 1888, Llaneces moved to Paris, where he established a studio in the Villa des Arts near Montmartre. He became known for his genre paintings and portraits of figures dressed in 17th and 18th-century fashion. His work gained international prestige, leading to participation in the Salón de Paris and the Exposición Universal. For his contributions, he was decorated as a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
Llaneces was also a sculptor, producing works such as a bronze bust of Goya. His career included significant exhibitions in Argentina, where he achieved commercial success and received various commissions. He died in Madrid in 1919.
