A Life of Exile and Artistry
Born in Montesquiu, Catalonia, José Balmes was forced to leave Spain during the Spanish Civil War due to his father's political militancy. His family traveled to Chile aboard the SS Winnipeg, a journey facilitated by the Chilean government's aid to Spanish Republicans. In his new homeland, Balmes pursued his passion for art, entering the School of Fine Arts of the University of Chile, where he studied under Pablo Burchard and Camilo Mori. He eventually obtained Chilean nationality in 1947.
Balmes's life was deeply intertwined with political engagement. A member of the Communist Party's Central Committee, he supported the Popular Unity government led by Salvador Allende. Following the 1973 coup d'état, he lived in exile in France, where he served as a professor at Pantheon-Sorbonne University. He returned to Chile in 1986, eventually receiving the National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1999 and the Altazor Award in 2002.
