A Legacy of Line and Landscape

Berlin, 1748. A child is born into a lineage defined by sound, the son of composer Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and grandson of the legendary Johann Sebastian Bach. Yet, this young man, also named Johann Sebastian Bach, seeks a different medium for his expression. He moves through the academic corridors of Leipzig, where he studies under Adam Friedrich Oeser, refining a hand capable of delicate precision.

His early work finds its rhythm in the brush drawing. These are not mere sketches but detailed, idyllic landscapes populated by bustling figures. The influence of Salomon Gessner is unmistakable here, visible in the way light and movement settle upon the terrain. He captures a sense of pastoral life through fine lines and careful composition.

Shifting Focus and Final Movements

The trajectory of his life moves from the German heartlands toward the edges of Europe. In May 1773, Dresden becomes his setting. By February 1776, he is in Hamburg, following his father’s appointment as Director of Music. The landscapes begin to change. As his life nears its end, the focus shifts away from the quietude of nature toward the complexity of the human form.

He turns his attention to historical and mythological scenes, imbuing his work with narrative weight. His skill extends into the smaller, more intricate realms of vignettes and illustrations for the works of Gottlieb Rabener and Christian Felix Weiße. The brush becomes a tool for storytelling through character and myth.

In September 1776, he sets out for Rome. The trip is intended as a period of study, but the momentum of his career is abruptly halted. After arriving in February 1777, a serious illness takes hold. He dies in 1778 at the age of 29, leaving behind a fragmented body of work that remains scattered across Europe.

The remnants of his artistic output are held in various repositories:

  • Coburg
  • Dresden
  • Hamburg
  • Leipzig
  • Vienna
