The Life and Career of Henri Lerambert
Born in Paris, France, Henri Lerambert was a Renaissance painter who also served as a decorator and the creator of tapestry cartoons. He belonged to a family of artists, including his father Louis Lerambert, a master mason and sculptor, and his brothers Louis I and Pierre, who were sculptors. His professional journey began at the Château de Fontainebleau, where he was documented working between 1568 and 1570 under the direction of Primaticcio. By the mid-1570s, he had been received as a master painter.
Lerambert's career saw him appointed as the ordinary painter to the King in 1591, and later, in 1600, he was named the painter of the King's tapestries. His work was closely linked to the renewal of Parisian tapestry at the end of the sixteenth century, where he contributed to the development of cartoons for various series, including The Story of Artemisia, The Story of Coriolanus, and The Story of Diana.
