Life and Artistic Training
Born in Strasbourg, France, Friedrich Arnold was a painter and draftsperson of German origin. His family lineage included architects, such as his father, Jaques Frédéric Arnold, and his grandfather, Jaques Frédéric Arnold. In 1838, he was known to the painter Eugen von Guérard, who met and sketched him in Rome. Arnold's training likely involved studying architecture under Georg Moller in Darmstadt, a connection supported by his 1841 work, Vue de Darmstadt, prise au Belvédère du Théatre.
During the period of 1842 to 1843, Arnold was listed as a student of the landscape class under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, though he was categorized as an architecture painter. His travels and studies took him to various locations, including Heisterbach, Xanten, Bacharach, and several municipalities in the northern Black Forest, such as Lautenbach, Gengenbach, and Haslach. In 1845, he married Julie Lehmann in Alsace and returned to Strasbourg, where he eventually passed away at the age of 38.
Notable Works and Subjects
Arnold's body of work includes various architectural subjects and landscapes, many of which were exhibited with the Société des amis des arts de Strasbourg. His documented works focus heavily on ecclesiastical structures and regional views, including:
Additionally, his portraiture and sketches are noted, such as a drawing of him by Eugen von Guérard in 1838, and his inclusion in a 1842 oil painting of Düsseldorf artists by Friedrich Boser.
