The Life and Career of Engelbert Willmes
Born in Cologne, Germany, Engelbert Willmes was a multifaceted figure in the nineteenth-century art world. He established himself as a painter, etcher, and art dealer. His formal artistic training began in Cologne, where he was a student of Ferdinand Franz Wallraf at the Zentralschule. Seeking to further his education, he traveled to Paris, where from 1808 to 1812, he studied in the studios of Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Baptiste Regnault, and also attended the École des beaux-arts.
Following his studies in Paris, Willmes returned to Cologne and became active as an art dealer. By 1822, he was operating his own art dealership.
