The Life and Art of Bernard Gärtner
Born in Trier, Germany, Bernard Gärtner was a painter who specialized in landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. His formal artistic training began at the Kunstgewerbeschule Trier, followed by studies at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. After settling in Düsseldorf, he became a member of the Künstlerverein Malkasten. His travels were extensive, including stays in Berlin and Munich, a journey through Italy, and time spent in Upper Bavaria and Switzerland. Notably, he spent the winter of 1927/1928 in Egypt.
Gärtner's work is characterized by a richness of color. His painting style was influenced by Paul Cézanne and other Impressionists. Following his service as a soldier in the First World War, where he sustained a permanent injury, he exhibited regularly in Berlin, the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, and various West German museums. His works were also featured in exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Nuremberg, and Munich.
