The Life and Art of Augustus Koopman
Born in Charlotte, United States, Augustus Koopman was a painter, printmaker, etcher, and graphic artist. His formal training began at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. Koopman’s life was deeply connected to France; he spent his winters in Paris and his spring and summer months in Étaples and Équihen. Between 1902 and 1906, he lived in London, focusing on portrait painting. He was a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, having been elected as an associé in 1912. His career included significant achievements such as creating the mural Industrial Arts for the United States Pavilion at the Paris World's Fair in 1900.
Artistic Style and Subject Matter
Koopman’s body of work was thematically diverse, encompassing maritime landscapes, figurative depictions, and portraits. He was particularly recognized for his scenes of the sea, ships, and storms, including works such as The Wind Storm, A Windy Day, and Horses Running to Meet a Boat. His 1904 painting, Return of the Shrimpers, earned a medal at the St. Louis World's Fair and was exhibited at the International Art Exhibition in Venice in 1910. His style evolved from being influenced by the Dutch Hague School to embracing Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, characterized by a loose style and the use of bold, impasto brushstrokes and vivid colors. As an etcher, he produced detailed prints of fishermen, café scenes, and individuals.
