作品詳細説明

The work of Marian Stępak consists of two forms cut from wooden board, irregular and mutually symmetric, on which the patterned fabric of socks is pulled. The forms are adjacent to each other by the longer straight sides, as if composing their reciprocal reflection, or being the parts of a peculiar diptych. The work, realising a technical formula for the installation or the ready-made, through its flatness and the principle of pulling the material on a sort of stretcher, belongs to the world of painting. アーティストの略歴

Marian Stępak: Embracing Decay and Transforming Textiles

Marian Stępak, born in Koronowo, Poland, in 1957, is a multifaceted artist whose work delves into profound themes of transformation and the inevitable passage of time—particularly as manifested in textiles and clothing. His artistic journey began with formative studies at Liceum Sztuk Plastycznych in bydgoszcz, followed by advanced training at Wydział Sztuk Pięknych UMK, where he earned his diploma specializing in painting under the guidance of prof. Stanisław borysowskiego. This grounding in classical technique informs his contemporary practice, yet Stępak consistently seeks to push boundaries and explore unconventional perspectives on artistic expression. Currently residing in Toruń, Poland, Stępak’s career has been marked by a dedication to both teaching and artistic creation. He holds the prestigious title of Professor of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University, fostering the next generation of artists while simultaneously pursuing his own creative endeavors. His passion extends beyond academia; he founded Toruń Gallery Nad Wisłą, establishing a platform for showcasing his work and engaging with fellow artists—a space that has hosted over 120 exhibitions since its inception. Furthermore, Stępak’s involvement in the Fundacja Praktyk Artystycznych ‘i…’ underscores his commitment to supporting emerging talent and promoting artistic dialogue within Poland. Stępak's artistic vision centers around confronting mortality and celebrating the beauty inherent in deterioration. He meticulously examines discarded garments—representing fragments of lives lived—transforming them into evocative artworks that capture their textures, colors, and subtle narratives. This process isn’t merely about repurposing material; it’s a deliberate act of honoring history and acknowledging the cyclical nature of existence. Influenced by Surrealist explorations of subconsciousness and Dadaist rejection of traditional artistic conventions, Stępak's work embodies a postmodern sensibility characterized by conceptual rigor and an appreciation for materiality. His exploration of textiles isn’t simply decorative; it serves as a conduit for conveying complex ideas about memory, loss, and regeneration. The artist meticulously dissects fabrics—often sourced from antique shops or flea markets—analyzing their patterns, weaves, and the stories they silently hold. Through layering techniques and subtle manipulations of color and texture, Stępak transforms these fragments into monumental canvases that invite contemplation on themes of decay and renewal. This approach distinguishes him from many contemporary artists who prioritize polished surfaces and idealized representations; instead, Stępak embraces imperfection as a source of artistic power. The artist’s prolific output has garnered considerable recognition within the Polish art community. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across Poland and internationally, cementing his reputation as a significant voice in contemporary textile art. Notably, “Socks II” exemplifies his distinctive style—a captivating piece that showcases Stępak's masterful command of texture and color to convey an emotional resonance that transcends mere visual aesthetics. This enduring fascination with the transformative potential of seemingly insignificant objects speaks volumes about Stępak’s artistic philosophy: a belief in finding beauty within vulnerability and honoring the legacy of past experiences.
