      chen yifei, a renowned chinese painter, art director, and film director, was born on april 12, 1946, in ningbo, china. he began his artistic journey at the high school for art in shanghai, graduating in 1964, followed by the shanghai training school of art (also known as the shanghai college of art) in 1965. this marked the beginning of his focus on oil painting.

      chen's talent and mastery of oil painting techniques won him recognition by the authorities, despite being denounced for "capitalist behavior." he became a central figure in the development of chinese oil painting and one of china's most renowned contemporary artists. his early work, characterized by grand heroic events and big mao zedong portraits, soon gave way to a more romantic and european style.
