friedrich august stüler (1800-1865) was a german architect, known for his work in the neoclassical and renaissance revival styles. he was a student of karl friedrich schinkel and became one of the most important architects of the prussian state. stüler was commissioned by king frederick william iv of prussia to design the neues museum on museum island in berlin, which was built from 1843 to 1855. david chipperfield (born 1953) is a british architect, known for his minimalist and modernist designs. he was commissioned to restore the neues museum after it suffered damage in world war ii and decay in east germany. the restoration was completed in 2009, and the museum is now home to the ägyptisches museum, the papyrussammlung, the museum für vor- und frühgeschichte and parts of the antikensammlung. chipperfield also designed the james simon gallery, a visitor center and art gallery on museum island, which opened in 2019.
