Early Life and Artistic Training
Thomas Bang was born on September 6, 1938, in Copenhagen, Denmark. As a young man, he found himself drawn to the surrealist approaches of artists like Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst, and Yves Tanguy. This early interest in the subconscious and the strange would eventually find its way into his later explorations of form and object.
His formal training took him across several institutions in the United States. He began his studies at the University of Cincinnati from 1958 to 1959. From there, he moved to the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he remained until 1961. His education continued at Yale University between 1961 and 1962. Finally, he spent time at the University of Southern California from 1962 to 1964, focusing his studies on industrial design, drawing, and painting.
Artistic Style and Techniques
His work often centers on the potential of the object, treating physical matter as a site for investigation. Using an existentialist approach, he works with modest materials to explore the tension between construction and destruction. The fragment appears repeatedly, suggesting a state of being that is never quite whole. He moves between the act of covering and uncovering, creating a sense of process where structure is constantly being questioned. These works often reflect a dissonance, an absurd perception of the gap between our internal selves and the physical surroundings we inhabit.
The transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional work is evident in his practice. He has worked extensively with drawing and ink, but his focus shifted toward sculptural objects and installations. In his later years, his pieces grew in scale, often utilizing wood paired with metal, wax, and paint. Sometimes, strips of plastic or cloth are added to the composition, adding layers of texture to the wooden forms. His objects do not seek to provide answers; instead, they exist as inquiries into how we perceive space and form.

His work moved through various spaces, finding its way into collections across Europe and the United States, including the Esbjerg Kunstmuseum.
His contributions to the field have been marked by several specific honors. In 1990, he was awarded the Eckersberg Medal. Later, in 1994, he received a Lifetime Grant from Statens Kunstfond. The recognition continued into the new millennium when he was awarded the Thorvaldsen Medal in 2000.
