A Life Shaped by Light and Water

Joseph Raffael arrived in the world in Brooklyn, New York, as the youngest of three children. His parents brought roots from Sicily and Switzerland to this American landscape, and much of his early life was defined by a quiet, observant way of being. When he was ten years old, a bout of spinal meningitis left him confined to his bed for long stretches. During these days, he looked out of his window at the trees and the neighborhood, finding a way to translate the movement of the world into drawings. This early habit of watching closely stayed with him.

His formal training began in earnest during his high school years through classes at the Brooklyn Museum. He later attended Cooper Union and eventually the Yale School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Josef Albers. While Albers was known for a more abstract approach to color, Raffael found himself drawn toward the tangible beauty of the natural world. In 1958, a Fulbright fellowship allowed him to spend two years in Florence and Rome, an experience that led him to begin creating complex watercolors of flower forms.

The Language of Nature

As his career progressed, Raffael moved from the East Coast to Marin County, California, and later to the South of France. His work began to change alongside his surroundings. In the early 1970s, he started a series of water paintings that utilized photographs of rivers as a foundation. He would often project color slides directly onto his canvas or paper, working with layers of gesso and mixing paints with turpentine to achieve a specific luminosity. This method allowed him to capture the way light hits a moving surface.

His subject matter frequently returned to the elements: water, flora, wildlife, and landscapes. He had a particular affinity for water lilies and the intricate details of blossoms. His technique often involved a meticulous process where he might use dozens of different hues in a single large-scale work. By breaking an image into a grid or using many layers of color, he could create a sense of depth that changed depending on how far a viewer stood from the piece. In later years, his focus shifted toward smaller formats and themes involving spiritual imagery and the connection between animals and nature.

A Legacy in Color

Throughout his life, Raffael’s work was recognized by various institutions and honors. He received the First Prize at the Tokyo International Biennial in 1974 and held a Louis Comfort Tiffany Fellowship in 1960. His paintings found homes in many significant collections, including:

His ability to blend the vigorous energy of Abstract Expressionism with a realistic focus on subject matter helped define his place in contemporary realism. He remained active in his studio, painting until very near his death in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, in 2021. His life was a long conversation with the beauty he found in a single petal or a flowing stream.
