A Pioneer of the Australian Landscape
Born in Hamilton, Scotland, John Mather was a prominent Scottish-Australian painter and etcher. After studying at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and the school of the National Gallery in Edinburgh, he traveled to Paris and London before emigrating to Melbourne in 1878. As an early practitioner of painting en plein air in Victoria, Mather sought to faithfully represent the light and color of the Australian landscape, moving away from earlier European tones to achieve a closer visual truth. He was a founding member of the Australian Artists Association in 1886 and served as president of the Victorian Artists Society for many years, contributing to the development of the local art scene.
Mather's dedication to his craft extended to the technical mastery of etching. He was among the first to practice the medium in Victoria, importing professional printing equipment from London to strengthen the foundations of etching practice in Melbourne. His work included both landscape etchings and figurative subjects, such as his first known print, a portrait of Louis Abrahams, which he produced around 1886.
Legacy and Artistic Contributions
Throughout his career, Mather was a celebrated teacher and a significant figure in the Victorian art scene. He maintained several studios in Melbourne, including locations on Collins Street and in South Yarra, where he offered lessons in oil and watercolor. His influence as a mentor is evident in the success of his many students, such as Jessie Traill and Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Beyond teaching, he held prominent leadership roles, serving as President of the Victorian Artists Society and as a member of the Felton Bequest Committee. He was also appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Public Library, Museums and National Gallery of Victoria in 1892. Additionally, he was a pioneer of etching in Victoria, having imported professional equipment to support the medium's development.
