Riding habit by Creed, which had been famous for the quality of its tailored suits. This habit which mixes the tailored jacket and jodhpurs that provided functional riding wear for men with feminine elements such as the long skirt, was the formal standard for women riders until the 1930s. The quality tailoring and careful hand stitching combine with dignified, thick fabrics to create a refined silhouette characterized by functional beauty.Horse riding was traditionally a privilege of the upper classes, and enjoyed by women as well as men. In France, the riding habit worn by women called “amazone,” after the mounted female warriors of Greek legend. The riding habits incorporated elements from men’s riding wear, but women were not permitted to straddle a horse, and had to ride sidesaddle wearing a skirt. In the second half of the 19th century, riding began to gain popularity among the general public, but sidesaddles and skirts remained the norm for women. For the sake of safety and functionality, women actually wore similar breeches as men, but they were inevitably hidden by a skirt. Other than exceptions, such as Gabrielle Chanel, who was already wearing jodhpurs and riding together with men around the time of World War I, it was not until the end of the 1930s that sidesaddle largely disappeared.

Richard Creed: Exploring Suburban Landscapes Through Contemporary Painting

Richard Creed is a British contemporary artist currently residing in London, whose work focuses on capturing the essence of urban and semi-rural environments through meticulous observation and expressive markmaking. Driven by a fascination with the interplay between nature and architecture—particularly within the context of suburban Britain—Creed’s artistic practice embodies a commitment to conveying nuanced emotional responses to everyday experiences.
  • Early Life & Education: Details about Creed's formative years are scarce, however he pursued formal art training at Chelsea School of Art in London, honing his skills in drawing and painting techniques.
  • Style & Technique: Creed’s distinctive style is characterized by a deliberate blending of realism and abstraction. He employs oil paints on canvas to create textured surfaces that capture subtle shifts in light and colour—a technique rooted in Luminism, an artistic movement originating in the mid-19th century that prioritizes atmospheric perspective and spiritual contemplation.
  • Influences: Creed cites William Trost Richards as a significant inspiration, recognizing Richards’ masterful depiction of American landscapes imbued with profound emotional resonance. Furthermore, he acknowledges the influence of British Pre-Raphaelites, whose emphasis on detailed observation and symbolic imagery aligns with his own artistic sensibilities.
  • Notable Exhibitions & Recognition: Creed's artwork has garnered acclaim through participation in prestigious exhibitions such as The Hampstead Art Society Summer Exhibition and The John Moores Painting Prize at the Walker Art Gallery. His pieces have been showcased in UK venues like Pitshanger Gallery in London, and internationally in China, Turkey, Singapore, Belgium, and Sweden.

The ‘Morning, Noon and Night’ Series: A Reflection on Urban Rhythm

Creed's most celebrated body of work revolves around the 'Morning, Noon and Night' series—a collection of paintings depicting scenes from suburban London during different times of day. These canvases are notable for their careful consideration of composition, colour palettes, and textural surfaces. The artist’s aim is not merely to reproduce visual impressions but rather to distill the emotional atmosphere of each moment—the quiet solitude of dawn, the bustling energy of midday, and the contemplative stillness of dusk. Through his meticulous brushwork and subtle tonal variations, Creed succeeds in conveying a palpable sense of place and capturing the psychological impact of urban life on the human spirit.
  • Compositional Strategies: Creed utilizes geometric forms—particularly rectangles and squares—to delineate architectural structures within his landscapes, creating visual anchors that guide the viewer’s gaze.
  • Colour Harmony: The artist employs muted colour harmonies—often dominated by earthy tones—to evoke a feeling of tranquility and understated beauty.
  • Surface Texture: Creed achieves remarkable textural depth through layering multiple coats of oil paint, resulting in surfaces that resemble weathered stone or aged timber—materials commonly found in suburban environments.

Exploring Themes of Observation & Spiritual Connection

At the core of Creed’s artistic vision lies a deep appreciation for the natural world and its capacity to inspire contemplation. Like Richards before him, Creed believes that art should serve as a conduit for accessing spiritual truths—a conviction reflected in his unwavering dedication to capturing authentic visual experiences. He approaches each painting with meticulous attention to detail, striving to convey not only what he sees but also how he feels—a process rooted in the Luminist tradition’s emphasis on conveying emotional resonance alongside accurate representation.

Legacy & Continuing Artistic Practice

Richard Creed's contribution to contemporary British art is marked by his distinctive stylistic approach and unwavering commitment to exploring themes of observation and spiritual connection. His work stands as a testament to the enduring power of Luminism—a movement that prioritizes atmospheric perspective and emotional depth—while simultaneously engaging with the complexities of modern urban life. Continuing to refine his technique and deepen his artistic vision, Creed remains active in exhibiting his paintings and furthering his exploration of the relationship between art and experience.
