Early Life and Education
Hidetoshi Nagasawa (1940-2018) was a Japanese sculptor and architect who established a significant artistic presence in Italy. Born in Tōneiji, Manchuria, his early life was shaped by the geopolitical complexities of post-war Asia. He pursued formal training in architecture, graduating from Tokyo in 1963. This foundational education would later inform his sculptural and environmental works, blurring the lines between disciplines.
Journey to Italy and Artistic Beginnings
In 1966, Nagasawa embarked on an extensive bicycle journey across Asia and Europe – a formative experience that broadened his artistic horizons. This journey culminated in Milan, Italy, where he decided to settle permanently in 1968. The vibrant Italian art scene provided a fertile ground for his developing artistic vision.
Founding Casa degli Artisti & Collaborative Work
Nagasawa was deeply involved in the collaborative spirit of the Milanese art world. In 1979, he co-founded the Casa degli Artisti with Luciano Fabro and Jole de Sanna – a space dedicated to fostering artistic exchange and experimentation. This collective endeavor highlights his commitment to community and dialogue within the arts.

He also held solo exhibitions at prominent institutions including the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea in Milan (1988), the Galleria Comunale in Bologna (1993), and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Mallorca (1996).
