After the loss of his beloved wife, Thelma, to cancer in 1956, Mumma navigated a period of profound grief, eventually moving to Gainesville, Florida, to be near his daughter. It was here, amidst the challenges of diabetes and the eventual loss of both legs, that a serendipitous moment in 1969 ignited a creative fire that would consume his remaining years.
Encouraged by his daughter, Carroll, to attend an art class at the age of sixty, Mumma’s foray into formal training was met with harsh criticism. An instructor’s dismissal of his work as sloppy did not discourage him; instead, it acted as a catalyst for a fiercely independent and obsessive creative journey. Rejecting the constraints of academic critique, he retreated into a private, prolific inner world.
