- Born in Chittagong, Bangladesh in 1950 to Mokhlessur Rahman and Shamsun Nahar.
- Grew up in Dhaka, attending Kamrunnessa Govt Girls High School and later the College of Home Economics, Azimpur.

- By 2004, Bibi Productions employed approximately 35,000 rural weavers across Bangladesh, demonstrating a commitment to economic empowerment through artisanal work.

- With support from UNESCO, Russell organized her first European fashion show in Paris in 1996, introducing Bengali aesthetics to an international audience.
