A life in color and stagecraft

Jens Waldemar Wang began his days in Fredrikstad, born on 11 March 1859. His early years were not spent in front of a canvas but within the rhythms of trade in Kristiania, a path he eventually left behind to seek something else. By 1882, he had entered the royal drawing school, spending three years refining his eye while painting alongside Christian Krohg. This period of study brought him closer to the textures of light and pigment that would define his later work.

In 1885, the pull of Paris led him to the Académie Julian. There, under the supervision of Bouguereau, he learned the discipline of the brush. His travels were frequent, often taking him back to France for scholarship trips that kept his techniques aligned with modern developments. These years abroad provided the foundation for a career that would eventually move from the easel to the much larger scale of the theatre.

The theater and the brush

While many remember him for his paintings, Wang found a lasting purpose in the service of the stage. He took up work as a theatre painter, first at the Christiania Theater and later at the National Theatre, where he served as chief of the decorating service from 1899 to 1918. His hands were busy with the arrangement of equipment and decorations for the plays of Ibsen and Bjørnson. He approached these large-scale tasks with an energetic focus, ensuring that the visual world of the stage kept pace with modern technical demands.

His output was varied, ranging from small works shown at autumn exhibitions to significant graphic projects. Some notable pieces include:

  • Fjøsidyl (1888)
  • Good Friends (1886)
  • Aftersummer (1889), which received an honorable mention
  • A publication in 1925 containing 24 pictures for Peer Gynt

Final years in Oslo

The work of Wang was marked by a certain vigor in color and a briskness in his painting style. He moved through the art world with a practical understanding of both fine art and stage engineering, often looking toward places like Rothenburg for new studies. His presence in the Norwegian art scene was felt through both his exhibition pieces and his essential work behind the scenes in the theatre.

He remained in Oslo until his death on 28 May 1926. He left behind a legacy of painted surfaces, both those meant for gallery walls and those designed to disappear into the shadows of a theatrical performance.
