Description de la pièce

The painting consists of four vertical stretcher bars connected together, creating a vast panoramic space, painted freely with wide brush strokes. They are all covered with almost vertical, diagonal stripes suggesting the representation of a field and furrow soil, although the vivid colouring (azure, red, yellow and green) and complete lack of detail makes one assume that it is a pure abstract painting. The suggestion of perspective was achieved by pure painting means and refers to painting tradition stemming back to the post-impressionists; whereas abstract colour plays refer to the tradition of post-war modernism, which revived in the 1980s – the time when Leona Tarasewicz made his debut – with the wave of new expression. The lack of horizon line (the point where stripes intersect is far beyond the pictorial space) evokes an impression of dominant horizontality which, combined with the scale of the piece, may be a reminder of another genealogical line of this painting: abstract expressionism. However, the specific context of Tarasewicz’s biography and the fact that he works in the countryside in the eastern region of Poland (białostocczyzna) evokes the tradition of icon and Belarusian roots, which are nonetheless significant elements of the origins of his pieces. They hold no traces of religious iconography, there is, however, a similar kind of sublimation of the sensual and carnal experiences into spiritual ones. The painter is consequent in not giving titles to his works, which suggests that he wishes to escape the trap of representation, as well as to be classified on the basis of just one single and defined painting tradition. On the contrary, it is the diversity of traditions and associations that create the specific aura of Tarasewicz’s paintings – referring to both being in nature and with nature, as well as to the sophisticated colour research, which museums aim at. Biographie de l'artiste

Leon Tarasewicz: A Painter of Polish Landscapes

Leon Tarasewicz (born March 14, 1957 in Waliły, Poland) is a celebrated Polish painter and professor of fine arts recognized for his distinctive approach to portraying the beauty and vibrant hues of the Polish landscape. His canvases frequently delve into the complex history of the Polish borderland—a region marked by shifting boundaries and cultural influences—resulting in artworks that are both visually arresting and intellectually stimulating.

Early Life and Artistic Formation

Born into a family steeped in artistic tradition, Tarasewicz’s passion for painting ignited early in his life. Encouraged to pursue his creative inclinations from a young age, he embarked on his academic journey at Warsaw University's Academy of Fine Arts, where he honed his skills under the guidance of influential Polish artists—a formative experience that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. Tadeusz Dominik’s studio served as a crucible for developing Tarasewicz’s technique and conceptual understanding. This early mentorship instilled in him a deep appreciation for meticulous observation combined with expressive abstraction – principles that would become cornerstones of his artistic practice.

Distinctive Artistic Style and Recurring Themes

Tarasewicz's paintings are characterized by bold brushstrokes and an exuberant palette, capturing the essence of Polish nature with remarkable immediacy. He consistently explores themes centered around landscapes—particularly those reflecting the region’s turbulent past—employing a technique that blends abstraction with meticulous observation. His distinctive style leans heavily into color field painting, utilizing expansive washes of pigment to convey mood and atmosphere, alongside more textured surfaces that hint at geological formations and organic growth. Recurring motifs include depictions of forests, rivers, and skies, often imbued with symbolic resonance referencing historical events and cultural narratives. The artist’s masterful use of color—particularly luminous hues reminiscent of Belarusian folklore—creates immersive environments that invite contemplation on the passage of time and the enduring spirit of place.

Notable Achievements and Exhibitions

Tarasewicz’s artistic reputation grew steadily throughout his career, culminating in numerous solo exhibitions showcasing his evolving stylistic explorations. A particularly noteworthy presentation occurred at Galerie Nordenhake in Berlin and Stockholm, where visitors encountered a comprehensive overview of his oeuvre spanning several decades. Furthermore, he has graced the walls of the Silesian Museum in Katowice, Poland, earning recognition for his contribution to contemporary Polish art. His work has garnered acclaim from prestigious institutions such as The National Museum in Warsaw (Poland), cementing his position as one of Poland’s foremost visual artists. He was awarded the Paszport Polityki Prize in 2000 and the Jan Cybis Award in 1998, demonstrating his dedication to artistic excellence. In 2011, he received the Knight’s Cross of Polonia Restituta—a testament to his unwavering commitment to Polish heritage and culture.

Legacy and Recognition

Leon Tarasewicz’s paintings continue to inspire admiration for their expressive power and intellectual depth. His exploration of landscape as a conduit for historical reflection distinguishes him from many contemporary artists, establishing him as a singular voice within the realm of visual art. He actively promotes Belarusian cultural heritage alongside his artistic endeavors, furthering dialogue between cultures and enriching the broader artistic discourse. His work resides in prominent collections worldwide—a lasting testament to his enduring influence on the art world.
