James Torrington Bell was born in Leven, Fife, Scotland, on February 1892. His father, James Bell Sr., was a bank manager—efficient and conscientious—who instilled in his son a disciplined approach to life and work. His mother, Philadelphia Johnson, was equally active in the local church, shaping James’s moral compass and fostering a deep appreciation for tradition. Bell attended Edinburgh College of Art where he studied landscape painting under William Birrell—a teacher who championed Luminism, an artistic movement that sought to capture the ethereal beauty of twilight landscapes with muted tones and soft brushstrokes.
