Giovanni Gaspare Lanfranco était un peintre italien important appartenant à la période baroque. Son œuvre a surtout prospéré à Rome, où il est devenu renommé pour ses fresques dynamiques et ses compositions théâtrales. Il occupe une place significative dans la scène artistique romaine, souvent noté pour sa rivalité avec Domenichino.

Jeunesse et Formation

Le parcours artistique de Lanfranco a commencé à Parme, en Italie. En tant que troisième fils de Stefano et Cornelia Lanfranchi, il a d'abord servi comme page dans le foyer du comte Orazio Scotti. Son talent inné pour le dessin l'a conduit à un apprentissage auprès d'Agostino Carracci, frère d'Annibale Carracci, aux côtés de Sisto Badalocchio. Cette formation précoque au sein des palais Farnèse lui a fourni une base solide.

À son retour à Rome en 1612, Lanfranco a été en concurrence avec d'autres élèves de Carracci – notamment Reni, Albani et Domenichino – pour obtenir des mécènes. Son style a évolué vers une approche visionnaire et théâtrale, particulièrement adaptée aux peintures de plafond qui gagnaient en popularité au début du XVIIe siècle.

Les influences artistiques de Lanfranco étaient diverses. Il s'est inspiré des œuvres tardives de Ludovico Carracci et potentiellement de Caravaggio (comme on le voit dans son retable représentant l'Inspiration de Saint Luc). Cependant, il a également assimilé et adapté le style d'Antonio Correggio, comme en témoigne sa "Adoration des Bergers" peinte avant 1608. Son atelier est devenu très actif dans les années 1610, décorant Palazzo Mattei et la chapelle Buongiovanni à Sant'Agostino.

Réalisations Majeures et Importance Historique

La réalisation la plus importante de Lanfranco a été sa fresque "L'Assomption de la Vierge" sur le dôme de Sant'Andrea della Valle (achevée en 1627). Cet ouvrage monumental, exécuté à l'aide de la technique de perspective « sotto in su », est une étape importante de la peinture baroque, caractérisée par ses couleurs vibrantes et son énergie dynamique. Elle reflète la décoration pionnière de Correggio du Duomo di Parma.

Parmi les autres commandes notables, citons des fresques pour Palazzo Costaguti et une grande fresque au plafond à Villa Borghese ("Les Dieux de l'Olympe"). Il a également décoré la Sala de' Corazzieri et la Sala Regia du Palazzo del Quirinale. Son travail sur "L'Extase de Sainte Marguerite de Cortone" (1622) est censé avoir influencé la célèbre sculpture de Bernin, « Sainte Thérèse en Extase ».

La capacité de Lanfranco à créer des peintures de plafond illusionnistes à grande échelle a consolidé sa position d'artiste de premier plan au sein du mouvement baroque romain. Ses compositions dynamiques et sa maîtrise de la perspective ont considérablement contribué à la splendeur visuelle de nombreux églises et palais dans toute Rome.
