A Life in Color and Light

Born in 1810, Carl Løffler grew up in a world where the lines between craftsmanship and fine art often blurred. As the son of a building painter, his path was set early. He began his apprenticeship in 1825 while studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. By 1837, he had completed his training, earning the distinction of a master painter. His early years were defined by this rigorous discipline, moving from a student in the model school to a professional capable of transforming the very surfaces of the buildings people inhabited.

His talent for decoration led him to explore the ancient aesthetics of the past. In 1838, he was commissioned to decorate several rooms in the Pompeian Style for Hans Puggaard and another for Professor N.C.L. Abrahams. This interest in classical antiquity was not merely a passing phase. The Academy provided him with a stipend to travel to Italy, where he spent time studying the excavations at Herculaneum and Pompeii. These travels allowed him to bring the patterns and sensibilities of the ancient world back to Denmark.

The Art of Glass and Ornament

After returning from Italy in 1842, Løffler expanded his technical repertoire to include glass painting. This medium required a different kind of precision, one that worked with light rather than just pigment on a wall. His skill in this area was recognized when he competed for the Neuhausen Prize in 1845. His work eventually found its way into sacred spaces; he was commissioned to create two glass paintings for Christian IV's Chapel at Roskilde Cathedral. Though they were not installed as originally intended, they eventually found a home behind the organ in the Frederiksborg Chapel.

Løffler’s influence extended into the halls of the Academy and the formal structures of Danish society. He succeeded Peter Kongslev as a teacher at the Academy's ornamentation school in 1846. Later, in 1852, he took on the role of heraldic painter at Ordenskapitlet, succeeding Ole Larsen. His life was one of constant creation, moving between the delicate work of glass and the formal requirements of heraldry.

A Sudden End

In 1852, Løffler began building a property at Nybrogade 22, a project that would remain unfinished. His life was cut short during the 1853 Copenhagen cholera outbreak. He died on 28 July 1853, one of many victims of the epidemic. He was laid to rest in Assistens Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of decorative work that helped shape the visual character of the era.
