• Early Life & Education:
Upton’s formative years were spent in Worcestershire, where he developed an early passion for drawing and painting. He pursued formal artistic training at the Royal Academy Schools in London, honing his skills under influential tutors and immersing himself in the traditions of British art history. This grounding provided him with a foundational understanding of technique and aesthetic principles that would inform his subsequent artistic endeavors.
• Move to Cornwall & Artistic Development:
In 1968, Upton relocated to Cornwall, drawn by its rugged landscapes and inspiring atmosphere. He established himself as a teacher at Falmouth College of Art, nurturing the talents of aspiring artists and fostering a collaborative environment. Simultaneously, he embarked on an intensive exploration of Cornish scenery, experimenting with various mediums—primarily oil paint—to convey his profound connection to the region’s visual heritage.
• Style & Technique:
Upton's artistic style distinguished itself through several key characteristics. He favored large-scale canvases that allowed him to capture expansive vistas, employing thick impasto brushstrokes to imbue his paintings with palpable texture and dynamism. His palette leaned heavily towards vibrant hues—particularly reds, yellows, and blues—reflecting the fiery sunsets and turbulent seas of Cornwall. Furthermore, Upton’s compositions often incorporated elements of abstraction, subtly distorting recognizable forms to heighten emotional impact.
• Notable Works & Exhibitions:
Among Upton's most celebrated paintings are depictions of Land’s End and Mousehole harbor, showcasing his masterful ability to convey the grandeur and immediacy of Cornish landscapes. His works were exhibited extensively throughout Britain, including at the Royal Academy in London and numerous regional galleries. Critically acclaimed for their expressive power and technical precision, these paintings continue to resonate with viewers today.

Though Upton’s output remained relatively modest compared to some of his contemporaries, he nonetheless left an indelible mark on Cornish art history. His unwavering commitment to portraying the sublime beauty of Cornwall served as a catalyst for subsequent generations of artists seeking inspiration from the region's dramatic landscapes. Moreover, Upton’s pioneering approach to landscape painting—characterized by bold experimentation and emotional intensity—continues to inspire artists exploring new avenues of artistic expression.
