      This is a portrait of Alison Kirkcaldie, who was part of the family that owned Wellington’s Kirkcaldie and Stains department store. Mary Tripe has painted her in fancy dress, as the Queen of Sheba. In 1928, Alison Kirkcaldie was one of six young Wellington women chosen to participate in the Dream of Fair Women Pageant. The pageant was held in the Town Hall, with each participant dressed as a different queen. It was part of a fundraising carnival to raise money for the establishment of a National Art Gallery.       Mary Elizabeth Richardson, later known as Mary Elizabeth Tripe or Mollie Tripe, was born into a prominent New Zealand family. Her father's political career led the family to Wellington, where she pursued her artistic education at the Wellington School of Design. She demonstrated early promise and excelled in her studies, earning advanced qualifications that allowed her to pursue both an artistic and teaching career.

      Artistic Career and Style

      • Early Work: Initially painted in an Impressionist style.
      • Mature Style: Transitioned towards a more realistic style characterized by strong draughtsmanship.
