The Life and Art of Will Ashton
Born in Clifton, United Kingdom, Will Ashton was a prolific Australian Impressionist painter. He received his early training from his father, James Ashton, and later studied at the Olsson-Talmage studios in London and the Académie Julian in Paris. His connection to France was profound, particularly his fascination with the Seine, its bridges, and the buildings lining its banks. During his career, he traveled through Britain, Europe, and Egypt, often in the company of Lionel Lindsay or Charles Bryant. His works were exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide, and several of his paintings were accepted by the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français.
Professional Legacy and Recognition
Beyond his studio practice, Ashton held significant roles within the Australian art community. He served as the director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and was the first director of the David Jones Art Gallery. His leadership extended to the Commonwealth Art Advisory Board, where he served as chairman. His contributions to the arts were recognized through various honors, including being appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire and being made a Knight Bachelor. His artistic achievements were marked by multiple awards, including the Wynne Prize and the Godfrey Rivers Bequest prize.
