A Life in Burgundy
Philippe Quantin was a French painter whose career was primarily centered in Burgundy. He gained recognition for his religious scenes and decorative works, many of which were commissioned by wealthy Burgundian figures. In 1636, shortly before his death, he was named "peintre ordinaire" to Henri II de Bourbon, the Prince of Condé. His artistic output included significant decorative cycles, such as those for the cabinet du pastor fido at the château d'Ancy-le-Franc, executed between 1610 and 1615 for Charles-Henri de Clermont-Tonnerre. He also provided decorations for the château de Mussy-sur-Seine for Sébastien Zamet, the Bishop of Langres, and the cabinet des muses at the château de La Motte-Ternant between 1624 and 1628 for Charles de Marcilly-Cypierre.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
The works of Philippe Quantin are characterized by figures with distinctive round and tubular faces. His early compositions, particularly the series for the cabinet du pastor fido, show influences from the second school of Fontainebleau. As his career progressed toward its end, his style underwent a simplification, moving toward a more stripped-down approach with simple, neutral colors.
His religious repertoire includes several notable pieces held in various collections:
