A Life Between Continents

September 2, 1902, marks the beginning of Max Moreau in Soignies, Belgium. He is born into the hands of an artist, receiving his first lessons in draughtsmanship from his father. The movement of his life shifts after World War I when the family settles in Paris. Here, the young painter finds work as a set designer, navigating the theatrical shadows of the city. He spends hours within the Louvre, making meticulous copies of works by Frans Hals and Diego Velázquez. These early encounters with the masters form the foundation of his technical skill.

A marriage to Félicie Leclercq in 1928 brings a new direction. By 1929, the couple travels to Tunisia. This move initiates a lifelong connection to the Moorish culture of North Africa and southern Spain. The light and customs of these regions become the primary subjects of his gaze.

The Realist Eye

Moreau develops a style defined by loose brushwork and a commitment to realism. His work focuses on the inhabitants of the cities he visits, capturing the essence of people in traditional garb. He moves through Morocco, the Caribbean, and America, yet his most profound connections remain rooted in the Mediterranean and North African landscapes.

His repertoire includes:

  • Portraiture: Realist depictions of Arab men and women and members of high society.
  • Street Scenes: Whimsical captures of Paris, Granada, and North African urban life.
  • Still Life and Landscapes: Observational studies of his surroundings.

Granada and the Final Act

In 1966, the search for a permanent home leads to Granada, Spain. Moreau and his wife purchase a dilapidated property in the historic Albaicín district known as the Carmen de los Geranios. They dedicate years to its reconstruction, transforming the house into a Moorish-style residence that reflects the culture he spent decades documenting. This house becomes both his studio and his sanctuary.

The final decade of his life is marked by the onset of Parkinson's disease. He remains in Granada until his death on September 2, 1992, the same day of the year he was born. In a final act of devotion to the city that hosted his later years, he bequeaths his entire estate to Granada. The Carmen de los Geranios is subsequently converted into the Centro Cultural Max Moreau, a museum preserving his life and the art he produced.
