The Life and Art of Johann Mutter
Johann Mutter was a German painter and photographer. He studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Hermann Groeber and Karl Caspar. In 1934, he was awarded the Albrecht Dürer Prize of the City of Nuremberg. His painting style was expressionistic, and he focused his work on the landscapes found between the Lech and Ammersee rivers, particularly the Lech landscapes.
During the Nazi era, Mutter was classified as a degenerate artist. After a disagreement with a Gauleiter regarding his work, he temporarily withdrew from fine arts to focus on photography. During the war, he photographed artworks threatened by the conflict and captured images of the Katharinenbrücke after it was blown up by American forces. In April 1945, he took photographs of a prisoner and captive march from the city wall near the Jungfernsprungturm.
