Life and Artistic Training
Hermann Stenner was a German Expressionist painter and graphic artist. Born in Bielefeld, he began his training at the local Arts and Crafts school, where he practiced by making copies of old paintings. His formal academic journey included studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, under Heinrich Knirr, and spending time with Hans von Hayek at his art school in Dachau. Following recommendations from his teachers, he moved to study with Christian Landenberger at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart.
In Stuttgart, Stenner took composition classes from Adolf Hölzel, whose scientific approach to art led him to become one of Hölseb's master pupils. His career included a period in Paris and an invitation to exhibit at the first Expressionist art exhibition in Dresden. He also worked on murals for the Werkbund Exhibition alongside Oskar Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister.
Later Years and Legacy
During World War I, Stenner volunteered for service and was assigned to Grenadier Regiment #119. After serving on the Western Front, he was transferred to the Eastern Front in Poland, where he was killed near Iłów. Despite his short life, he produced a significant body of work consisting of 280 paintings and over 1,500 drawings.
His legacy is preserved through the Hermann-Stenner-Haus museum in Bielefeld, which features a core collection provided by Hermann-Josef Bunte.
