The Shadow of the Still Life
The year is 1610. A canvas rests in a studio, catching the light of a fading afternoon. On it, the subject is not the living, but the fallen. Still Life with dead Birds emerges from the darkness, a composition of feathers and form rendered in oil. The work exists as a quiet study of mortality, captured through the meticulous application of pigment on canvas. It is a scene of stillness, where the only movement is the eye tracing the contours of the avian subjects.
The painting carries a heavy, physical presence. Its dimensions—137.5 cm in width and 84.5 cm in height—command the space they occupy. There is a specific gravity to the way the birds are positioned, a starkness that defines the genre of the stilleben. This is not a celebration of nature in flight, but a meditation on its end.
