The Evolution of an Abstract Visionary

Edna Andrade was an American abstract artist and a significant figure in the Op Art movement. Born in Portsmouth, United States, her artistic journey began with early encouragement in drawing and painting. She pursued formal training at the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania, before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Her academic foundation was further strengthened through post-graduate studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where she was honored with two Cresson Traveling Scholarships. These travels allowed her to encounter the Bauhaus movement and German modernism, experiences that profoundly shaped her approach to color, design, and abstraction.

Andrade's work is characterized by a shift from organic abstraction to hard-edge geometry, often utilizing symmetrical squares and color juxtapositions. As an Op Artist, her paintings confront the nature of perception, creating highly abstracted, geometric images that possess illusionistic qualities. Her compositions can appear psychedelic or hallucinatory, often suggesting movement through the use of curvilinear lines and the science of perception. Throughout her career, she served as a teacher at various institutions, including Tulane University and The University of the Arts, where she taught for thirty years. Her diverse body of work has been included in numerous prestigious collections, such as:
