This work unfolds through an object, words and sounds, a series of personal enquiries regarding my family history. The starting point is a repeated name. The collar that I present is the synthetic recreation of a rosary that hanged on the wall that belonged to my house until I was four, and of which I keep a vague memory. On the other hand, Rosario is a repeated name in my family (my grandmother, grandfather and mother). Then I decided to look for synonyms for the word rosary. From each synonym, I looked for their synonyms, until I collected 61 words, which is the number of prayers that we pray in a rosary. I engraved the words in beads and inserted them in order of appearance. Later I joined my sisters and the three said the 61 words. These voices were recorded as part of the sound included in the piece. With this work, I attempt to search information starting from a family object with affective value, and dissemble it and compose it again with new and possible meanings. The track repeats in loop and the words are:Rosary/sort/series/enumeration/litany/flock/chain/list/string/slavery/subjection/dependence/succession/continuity/linking/mountain range/servitude/oppression/link/union/strap/leash/brake/subordination/tribute/submission/offspring/descendence/inheritance/prosecution/following/extension/line/power/dominion/right/demand/bondage/hindrance/tie/lock/connection/marriage/nuptials/wedding/connection/correspondence/conformity/unity/fusion/harmony/pairing/bite/contribution/tax/duty/census/burden/homage.Source: Itaú Cultural Visual Arts Award 2019-2020 Catalogue

Rosalba Mirabella: Exploring Urban Landscapes and Memory Through Vivid Imagery

Argentine visual artist Rosalba Mirabella’s work delves into the complexities of urban spaces and the enduring power of memory, crafting evocative pieces that resonate with both formal precision and emotional depth. Born in Tucumán, Argentina, in 1975, Mirabella pursued her artistic education at Universidad Nacional de Tucumán's Facultad de Artes, laying the foundation for a career marked by consistent engagement with contemporary art trends and critical exploration of cultural narratives.
  • Early Career & Exhibitions: Mirabella began exhibiting her work in the late 1990s, participating in both solo and group exhibitions that showcased her distinctive style—characterized by meticulous observation of architectural environments and a penchant for layering textures and colors to convey nuanced emotional states.
  • Recognition & Awards: Her artistic endeavors garnered significant acclaim through prestigious awards like Premio adquisición 8m (2021, 2022, 2023) presented at Casa Nacional de Bicentenario in Buenos Aires and the Museo Yrutia grant for “Los Amantes” alongside Rodrigo Cañas.
  • Notable Residencies & Collaborations: Mirabella’s artistic journey extended beyond Argentina, encompassing residencies in England where she honed her skills and fostered collaborations with fellow artists—a testament to her commitment to continuous learning and engagement within the broader art community.

Influences & Artistic Style

Mirabella's artistic vision draws inspiration from a confluence of sources, including Surrealist explorations of dreamlike landscapes and Constructivist principles emphasizing geometric abstraction. However, her distinctive style transcends stylistic categorization, prioritizing a deeply personal approach to representation—one that seeks to capture the essence of urban environments not merely as physical spaces but as repositories of human experience and collective memory. Her canvases often feature intricate patterns and textures that invite contemplation, mirroring the layered realities inherent in observing the city.

Key Projects & Exhibitions

Throughout her career, Mirabella has undertaken ambitious projects aimed at fostering dialogue between art and culture. “A Crime Has Many Stories,” commissioned by Haudenschild Garage, exemplifies this commitment to collaborative exploration—a multidisciplinary endeavor that reimagined Ricardo Piglia’s literary masterpiece within the framework of Buenos Aires' urban landscape. Furthermore, her participation in Centro Cultural Kirchner’s “La Marca Original: Arte Argentino” showcased her ability to engage with broader artistic currents and contribute to discussions surrounding Argentine identity. Other significant exhibitions include "Como un Destello" at CNB Contemporánea (2017) and “Ciudad Dormitorio” at Tokonoma, Buenos Aires (2018), cementing her reputation as a compelling voice within the Argentinian art scene.

Current Status & Future Directions

Currently residing in Argentina, Mirabella continues to teach at Universidad Nacional de Tucumán’s Facultad de Artes and actively pursues artistic endeavors—reflecting her unwavering dedication to both creative practice and pedagogical mentorship. Her ongoing exploration of urban spaces and memory promises to yield further captivating artworks that illuminate the complexities of human experience and contribute to a richer understanding of Argentine cultural heritage.
