Philip Edgerton (riize23): Navigating the Inner Landscape Through Digital Art

Philip Edgerton, known within the digital art community as riize23, is a compelling voice emerging from Texas, bringing a uniquely personal perspective to the world of 2D/3D digital painting, vector drawing, and dynamic painting. His artistic journey isn't merely about mastering technical skills; it’s a profound exploration of the human condition, filtered through the lens of lived experience—specifically, the often-unseen complexities of living with ADHD. Born in New York City but raised amidst the vibrant landscapes of Orlando, Florida, his life has been one of constant movement and adaptation, having also resided in North Carolina, Georgia, and South Korea before a period of service within the U.S. Army brought him back to Texas. This itinerant upbringing, coupled with a lifelong struggle against an undiagnosed ADHD, has shaped not only his personal narrative but also the very essence of his artistic expression. The early loss of both parents further contributed to a sense of displacement and otherness that permeates much of his work, creating a powerful resonance for those who have felt similarly marginalized.

The Echoes of Experience: Finding Form in Neurodiversity

riize23’s art isn't simply decorative; it is an intensely personal dialogue with the internal world. His creative process is deeply intertwined with his experience of ADHD—a condition that, for much of his life, went unrecognized and contributed to feelings of isolation. He channels this understanding, not just from his own perspective but also through the experiences of his daughter, who shares a similar diagnosis. This familial connection has proven profoundly influential, providing both inspiration and validation for his artistic explorations. The resulting artwork is characterized by its dynamic energy, often featuring fragmented forms, vibrant color palettes, and a sense of controlled chaos that mirrors the way an ADHD mind processes information and emotions. It’s not about depicting ADHD literally; rather, it's about conveying the *feeling* of living with it—the heightened sensitivity, the racing thoughts, the struggle to maintain focus amidst a whirlwind of sensory input. His pieces often evoke a sense of vulnerability alongside strength, reflecting the resilience required to navigate a world that isn’t always designed for neurodiverse individuals.

A Digital Palette: Technique and Style

riize23's mastery lies in his ability to translate these complex emotions into visually arresting digital forms. He seamlessly blends 2D and 3D techniques, utilizing vector drawing alongside dynamic painting methods to create layered compositions that invite prolonged contemplation. His color choices are deliberate, often employing bold contrasts and unexpected combinations to further amplify the emotional impact of his work. The resulting aesthetic is both futuristic and deeply human—a testament to his skill in harnessing technology to express profoundly personal themes. Works like "Jig Saw," "Allone," and “DEVILS WORK” exemplify this approach, showcasing a distinctive style that defies easy categorization while remaining instantly recognizable as the product of riize23’s unique vision. He doesn't shy away from exploring darker subject matter, confronting themes of loss, isolation, and inner turmoil with unflinching honesty.

Beyond Self-Portraiture: Connecting Through Shared Experience

While deeply rooted in personal experience, riize23’s art transcends the boundaries of mere self-portraiture. His work resonates with a broader audience because it speaks to universal human experiences—the search for belonging, the struggle against adversity, and the enduring power of hope. By openly sharing his journey through ADHD, he fosters empathy and understanding, creating space for others who may feel marginalized or misunderstood. He is contributing to a growing movement within the art world that celebrates neurodiversity and challenges conventional notions of creativity and artistic expression. His willingness to be vulnerable and authentic in his work has garnered him a dedicated following and established him as an important voice in the contemporary digital art landscape.

A Growing Legacy: Museums, Collections, and Future Directions

Though still relatively early in his career, riize23’s impact is already being felt within the art community. His pieces are gaining recognition for their originality and emotional depth, finding homes in private collections and sparking conversations about mental health awareness and neurodiversity representation. While not yet represented by major institutions like the Philip Hahn Collection or the Oratory of St Philip Neri, his work demonstrates a clear trajectory toward broader institutional acclaim. As he continues to refine his craft and explore new avenues of artistic expression, riize23 promises to remain a vital force in the digital art world—a testament to the power of vulnerability, authenticity, and the transformative potential of art as a means of self-discovery and connection.
