early life and education
ahmed cherkaoui, a prominent moroccan painter, was born in boujad in 1934. he is widely regarded as one of the leading modernist painters of moroccan art, particularly during the period following the country's independence in 1956. cherkaoui's educational background played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic style, having studied at the école des métiers d'art and école des beaux-arts in paris, as well as the school of fine arts in warsaw.influences and style
cherkaoui's work was influenced by a diverse range of western artists, including paul klee, roger bissière, and henri matisse. additionally, he drew inspiration from traditional moroccan art. his style, characterized by abstract motifs, began to take shape in 1959. initially, his paintings featured dark color combinations, but from 1965 onwards, his work became more light and spacious. notably, from 1966, cherkaoui applied his style to leather as a medium.notable works and exhibitions
