Produced in 1997, the drawings are visual documents of Mansaray’s personal experience of the civil war in Sierra Leone, which lasted nearly twelve years, from 1991 to 2002. A self-taught artist, Mansaray also taught himself engineering principles as a teenager after moving from Tongo, his birthplace, to Freetown, the country’s capital, in 1987. This interest has largely shaped his drawings, often construed as dissected diagrams of arthropod- shaped predatory drones or futuristic machines.
