The photographs reproduced on the postcards in this work depict locations throughout Brazil—including motels, bars, churches, and stores—that are named after foreign continents, countries, regions, and cities; these include the seemingly incongruous Alaska, Baghdad, China, Jerusalem, Las Vegas, and Tokyo. While postcards typically represent the touristic desire to capture an “authentic” local experience, Rivane Neuenschwander’s images document the artist’s travels throughout Brazil while reflecting the desire of local communities to identify with an increasingly globalized culture.

Rivane Neuenschwander’s artistic journey began in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where she was born in 1967. From a young age, her fascination with language and its relationship to the natural world—particularly the contours of the Brazilian landscape—would become central themes throughout her oeuvre. Her formal education solidified this interest; graduating from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 1993 provided a foundational understanding of artistic theory and practice. However, it was her postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Art in London in 1998 that truly propelled her into the international art scene.
