Biografía del artista
Early Life & Education
Celia Hempton (born Stroud, England) emerged as a distinctive voice in contemporary British art, driven by an unwavering fascination with confronting discomfort and challenging conventional artistic perspectives. Her formative years were marked by a grounding in traditional fine arts training at Glasgow School of Art from 2000 to 2003, where she honed her skills alongside fellow musician Lucy Rose in the band I Love Lucy—a collaboration that instilled within her an appreciation for sonic exploration and performance art. This early experience would prove influential in shaping her artistic trajectory. Seeking further refinement, Hempton pursued a Master of Arts degree in Painting at the Royal College of Art between 2005 and 2007, immersing herself in rigorous studio practice and establishing connections with fellow artists who shared similar ambitions. The ‘Chat Random’ Series & Digital Exploration
Hempton's breakthrough came with her groundbreaking series 'Chat Random,' initiated in 2014 and continuing to this day. This project represents a radical departure from established artistic conventions, utilizing the website Chatrandom.com as its primary source material—specifically, images of male genitalia captured through spontaneous online encounters. Rather than simply documenting these visuals, Hempton undertakes a meticulous process of cyclical observation: she scrolls through live feeds on her laptop, capturing fleeting glimpses of individuals encountered online, and subsequently translates these digital impressions into paintings. The resulting artworks are characterized by vibrant artificial colors—a deliberate stylistic choice intended to heighten emotional impact and disrupt viewers’ expectations. This series is considered a significant contribution to the discussion surrounding gendered gaze and artistic representation, positioning Hempton as a woman actively engaging with taboo subjects within the context of contemporary digital culture.Technique & Artistic Philosophy
Hempton's artistic approach prioritizes confronting uncomfortable feelings—a core element driving her creative process. She employs a distinctive technique rooted in layering and blending oil paints, creating textured surfaces that convey both physicality and psychological depth. Her canvases are imbued with an expressive quality reminiscent of Impressionism, albeit filtered through the lens of digital mediation. The artist’s deliberate use of color—often bold and jarring—serves as a conduit for conveying emotion and disrupting established visual hierarchies. Hempton sees herself as responding to the legacy of history painting, acknowledging its conventions while simultaneously subverting them through her exploration of new mediums and perspectives.Collaborations & Exhibitions
Beyond her solo paintings, Celia Hempton has engaged in collaborative projects that further enrich her artistic output. Notably, she partnered with her brother Sam Hempton on a sound piece in 2014—a testament to the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue within contemporary art practice. Her exhibitions span across Europe, Asia and North America, showcasing her work in prestigious venues such as Lisson Gallery, Abu Dhabi Art, and Whitechapel Gallery. Selected group shows include British Art Show 9 and The Living End: Painting and Other Technologies, cementing her reputation as a compelling artist pushing boundaries within the art world.Recognition & Legacy
In 2016, Celia Hempton was recognized as one of ‘tomorrow’s artists’ by Vitamin P3—a prestigious accolade acknowledging her artistic promise and establishing her place amongst emerging talents. Her work continues to provoke discussion about gender roles, visual representation, and the influence of digital media on artistic expression. Celia Hempton's unwavering commitment to confronting discomfort and challenging artistic norms ensures that her contribution to contemporary art will endure as a powerful statement regarding vulnerability and artistic innovation.Celia Hempton
